No injuries reported after fire forces White Woods students to evacuate

Details are few but fire officials and the Near North District School Board says all students at White Woods Elementary are safe and accounted for after a fire forced students and staff to evacuate to Northern Secondary earlier today in Sturgeon Falls.

Fire Chief Frank Loeffen says when crews arrived a classroom on the north end of the building was filled with smoke, and smoke was coming out of the windows.

Loeffen says the sprinklers did their job and started cooling and extinguishing the fire.

“The fire’s out now,” says Loeffen. “The kids followed their evacuation plan and all went to Northern, and their parents are coming to pick them up.”

He adds no injuries were reported and the Fire Marshall’s office was contacted. No injuries were reported.

School staff sent an email following the fire to share the students had evacuated and wouldn’t be able to return to school today.

More details will be added to the story as they become available.
