Canadore’s ICAMP 3D printing free face shields for health care and first responders

North Bay Police officers are protecting themselves against COVID-19 with face shields made by ICAMP at Canadore College.

“We are adapting and making necessary changes in our day to day operations in policing to ensure the safety of the people we serve and ensure that our officers can maintain their health,” said North Bay Police Inspector Kirk Kelusky. “People should not be alarmed. We are doing this for everyone’s safety.”

The Innovation Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping, more commonly known as ICAMP, provides the necessary resources for companies to create products and conduct research. ICAMP has 3D printing capabilities in metal and plastic, which it has been using to form the face shields. It also provides technology in many areas, including product design tools, prototype development, and reverse engineering.

ICAMP is producing 50 face shields a week and is offering them to healthcare agencies and first responders free of charge.

“Supporting our health care workers and first responders with personal protective equipment is vital in the battle against COVID-19,” said Canadore President George Burton. “Canadore’s ICAMP 3D printing and prototype design capabilities, along with our partners, are putting technology and know-how to work.”

ICAMP designed the equipment that helped New Ontario Brewery shift its production to hand sanitizer under the name of PureNorth Medical. ICAMP created the preliminary designs for the necessary vapour distilling columns and G&P Welding and Ironworks manufactured it.

Canadore College continues to receive requests for support from across the community and will help wherever possible.

“Canadore employees are engaged, putting their knowledge and resources to work supporting the larger effort to combat COVID-19,” said Burton.
