Red Scarf Project one highlight of AIDS Awareness Week

AIDS Awareness Week is underway and West Nipissing is part of the week-long event in conjunction with the AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area.

One project to draw attention to AIDS is the Red Scarf Project where both North Bay and West Nipissing are participants.

Suzanne Louiseize, a volunteer at the West Nipissing Community Health Centre, says 12 knitters have knitted and crocheted 23 scarves for this year’s effort.

“I’m happy with that and we’ll try to make even more next year and get an early start,” Louiseize said.

Louiseize first became aware of the project last year and says it’s an excellent initiative.

She says several scarves were made in 2018 but it was more of a last-minute thing.

The scarf output was greater this year because of the increased local awareness.

Louiseize says the Red Scarf Project is a great idea because it helps increase awareness about AIDS, and the end product also helps people.

“I like the idea of dressing up the posts and trees with the scarves and the fact that the scarves are then distributed to people who want something warm in the winter,” she said.

Louiseize says anyone can get involved in making the scarves and then bringing them to the Community Health Centre.

She adds the knitting program is a part of the health centre.

And there are also provisions for people who don’t know how to knit but still want to help increase awareness of AIDS.

“We’ve also had wool donated to us,” Louiseize said.

“That was really nice.  So if people knit and wanted to donate some red wool, we’ll knit them into scarves.”

In North Bay, volunteers who also knitted and crocheted red scarves will see the scarves tied in the downtown area.

The scarves contain HIV/AIDS awareness information and will be left for anyone to take.

ACNBA is asking people to take a selfie of them wearing a red scarf and sending it to the agency so it can post the images on social media.
