Millions of new trees to be planted on Ontario Crown forestland

A new tree-planting program is coming to Ontario’s Crown forestland.

Marc Serré, MP for Nickel Belt and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources announced the joint federal-provincial initiative.

It includes an investment of $61 million.

“Trees planted as part of the 2 Billion Trees program will not only help tackle climate change but also support the expansion of Canada’s forests and the restoration of important habitats, all while ensuring there is cleaner air and sustainable jobs in communities across Canada,” says Serré.

The program will see Ontario and Canada provide equal funding for activities like site preparation and tree planting to strengthen ecosystems in areas with little or no tree cover, including areas disturbed by forest fires.

Serré adds the program complements forest regeneration efforts and should result in about 60 million trees being planted through 2026.

That will depend on the availability of suitable Crown forestland and the range of projects identified by Ontario’s forest managers.
