The OPP has decided who will be the Detachment Commander of the Nipissing West OPP.
Inspector Michael Maville, who is currently the Detachment Commander of the Sault Ste. Marie OPP has been chosen as the first commander for the Municipality of West Nipissing’s inaugural provincial police force.
Maville joined the OPP in 2002 and has spent his entire career in Northeastern Ontario either in the Algoma District or Nipissing District.
Maville was first posted with the OPP in Chapleau then four years later transferred to the East Algoma OPP where he was stationed in Thessalon and became a Detective Constable.
Maville was in Thessalon for only two years before joining the OPP’s Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau in North Bay where he was part of the Drug Enforcement Unit.
In 2012, Maville became a Sergeant and part of the Provincial Communications Centre in North Bay.
He remained in that position until 2016 when he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and assumed the Detachment Commander position of the Sault OPP.
A highlight for Maville was in 2017 when he was the recipient of the 40 Under 40 Award.
The distinction is awarded by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and recognizes law enforcement people who are under 40 and demonstrate leadership and exemplify commitment to the profession.
When Maville received the award in 2017, he was one of only five Canadians among the group of 40 to be recognized.
Maville says he’s “honoured and humbled for the opportunity to lead the newly formed Nipissing West OPP”.
“I look forward to working closely with the members and the communities we serve to ensure that public safety is our top priority,” he said.
CAO of West Nipissing Jay Barbeau informed members of council about Maville’s appointment earlier this week ahead of the OPP’s formal announcement.
At the time Barbeau said he had little information other than the name of the new Detachment Commander, that he commanded the Sault OPP and that Maville is bilingual.
Maville’s appointment as the new Detachment Commander of the Nipissing West OPP is effective immediately.
