The SIU has no plans to charge Sudbury police officer after driver dies

The Special Investigations Unit says a Sudbury police officer did not cause or contribute to a collision between two vehicles where one of the drivers eventually died.

The SIU has released its ruling in the January 15th collision between an Audi and a Mitsubishi Lancer on Municipal Road 80 seriously injuring both drivers.

Four days after the crash, the driver of the Audi passed away after he was removed from life support.

On the 15th the Audi was the object of a high-speed chase involving Sudbury police.

At times speeds his 130 kilometres an hour which is almost twice the posted limit on Municipal Road 80.

However, the SIU found that the officer quickly slowed down and aborted the search shortly after it began.

The SIU says the driver of the Audi had plenty of time to slow down and also says it’s possible the driver may not even have known he was being pursued.

The special investigatory body says the officer neither caused nor contributed to the crash that would lead to the victim’s death four days later.

It says based on this evidence, its ruling is there are no reasonable grounds to charge the officer.
