Twenty drivers face a charge of distracted driving as a result of being caught by the North Bay OPP.
The provincial force carried out its annual Distracted Driving Campaign from March 11th to the 19th.
For several hours at a time during the campaign, police officers were watching motorist to see if they had both eyes on the road, or if they were doing something else like texting or had a cell phone up to their ears.
The OPP says distracted driving remains a serious road safety issue.
The force encourages people of all ages, passengers and non-passengers to let it know if someone is engaged in distracted driving.
Police want people to take a firm stance against others who endanger their passengers or other people with their illegal activity.
The penalty for distracted driving can be a fine as high a $1,000.
There’s also the loss of your driver’s license for three days and if convicted, your license could be dinged with three demerit points.
Distracted driving doesn’t just include communication devices.
A police officer can also ticket you for fiddling around with an entertainment device instead of keeping watch on the surrounding traffic.
