National Addictions Week continues

As the Alliance Centre in West Nipissing moves into full swing with National Addictions Week, the agency is putting out facts that some may find surprising.

This particular National Addictions Week takes place when for the first time, people in Canada can legally smoke up.

Leanne Estey with the centre has a simple message for people who intend to use cannabis and it’s proceed with caution.

Estey says Canadian young people are among the top cannabis users in the western world.

She also says there’s strong evidence that cannabis impacts brain development.

Estey says the brain continues to develop until about age 25.

“So when you use cannabis and your brain is still developing, it can lead to serious physical and emotional impacts and substance dependency,” Estey said.

The theme for this year’s National Addictions Week is All Walks of Life.

As part of the local promotion, the Alliance Centre has an open house and workshops this Thursday to increase public awareness about drug use.
