Sports tourism pays off for North Bay

Directors with the North Bay chamber of commerce got a solid idea Thursday night of how sports tourism is benefitting the city.  Larry Tougas, a retired teacher who now works for the city, is pursuing sports related events that generate economic activity.  And his work is paying off in spades.  Tougas says over the next three years North Bay will host 12 major events.  He says getting events isn’t hard, it’s getting them to come back.  That’s why he puts together large budgets so everyone is treated very well and have a great impression of North Bay ensuring a return trip.  Tougas says very few communities bid on the events he goes after because the process is time-consuming but not difficult.  A model is now being developed that shows how much economic activity each event generates for the city.
