Police warn about two letter scams

North Bay police are warning the public about more scams.  One involves a letter from Publishers Clearing House saying you’ve won $600,000.   Here, the con artists send you a cheque for nearly $10,000 to help cover the cost of taxes on the winnings.  The cheque is so you don’t have to use any of your own money to pay for the taxes.

You’re asked to cash the cheque and send the money to the con artists.  North Bay police say the cheque is a fake and if you cash it, you will have to reimburse the bank for the full amounts.   The other scam is the inheritance con where you get a letter that a distant relative has died and has left you millions of dollars.    Police say the letter is an effort by crooks to get personal information from you.
