Wine and cigarettes going up in price

The price of wine and cigarettes will soon be going up in West Nipissing. Starting Friday, the Ontario government will hike the tobacco tax rate by $3.00 for a carton of 200 cigarettes. They will also establish a minimum price of $7.85 for table wine. That increase will be phased in over the next few years.

The Ontario government has also pledged to introduce a new grant for students entering post-secondary education. The Ontario Student Grant would pay for student’s entire college or university tuition if their family’s income is $50,000 or less. The government will release more details on the new system in the coming months.

Meanwhile… Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli is criticizing the Wynne Liberals over their latest budget plan. In a statement, Fedeli says the Ontario government is making life more unaffordable, uncompetitive and unsustainable. PC Leader Patrick Brown says under the Liberal plan, tax revenue is expected to rise by more than $3-billion, and Ontarians will see $1.9-billion more in personal tax income.
