Family wants slower snowmobile speeds on frozen waterways

A Sudbury-area family is trying to get snowmobile speeds reduced following the death a family member earlier this month.  A 29-year-old woman near a fishing hut by the French River was struck and killed by a snowmobile.  The driver of the sled also died and OPP blame the crash on speed and visibility.  The family is calling for a maximum speed of 80 kilometres an hour on frozen waterways.

It also wants sledders to slow down to 20 kliks an hour when they’re within 50 feet of people engaged in activities like ice-fishing.  It’s running a petition by their MPP, John Vanthof of Timiskaming-Cochrane, before releasing it to the public to get support.
