The possibility that Algoma Public Health could be merged with the Sudbury and District Health Unit is not sitting well with the mayor of Elliot Lake. The concept is a recommendation from a consultant overseeing the re-organization of Algoma Public Health. But Mayor Dan Marchisella says the health minister should prepare for a fight if the merger idea gains steam.
Marchisella says all the mayors in Algoma oppose the suggestion. He says a big reason is because services would mostly likely be centralized in Sudbury. He’s adds a super large health unit would have a hard time delivering services to smaller communities where needs and demographics differ.
