Deputy mayor issues challenge

North Bay’s deputy mayor has a challenge for his colleagues.  Sheldon Forgette wants members of council to look for more efficiencies that can be applied to future budgets.  He says some councillors have been vocal about lowering taxes so he’s put out the challenge which also applies to him.  Forgette’s challenge follows council committee of the whole approving a 1.5 percent tax levy increase for 2016.  At the meeting, council was told that without the mayor’s plan to call in the North Bay Hydro loans, the 1.5 percent tax levy increase would have been 4.5 percent.

One area that will see more spending next year is Community Services.  Chair Mark King says there are several reasons for this including the switch to water meters which has increased costs for city-run operations.  Meanwhile, the City’s chief financial officer, Margaret Karpenko, says the city will see a small surplus this year. She can’t say exactly how much because some year-end entries still need to be made.
