Water meters dos and don’t

North Bay council is solidifying details of its water meter by-law.  One thing the city will do is not charge you to run the water over winter in case your pipes freeze.  But this is a one-time freebie and you need to fix the problem otherwise you will be charged for the water you use the following winter.  Councillor Mike Anthony likes this idea but has an alternative proposal he wants staff to consider.  Anthony is suggesting residents pay a flat rate during the coldest months based on what they normally use throughout the year.

Points to keep in mind with the water meters is homeowners need to occasionally check them for leaks and report leaks to the city.  Also you’re liable if you’re doing renovations and damage the meter.  The meters have a 20-year life and the city will replace them well before they start leaking because of age.
