SIU clears West Nipissing cop in fatal collision

The Special Investigations Unit says there is no reason to charge an officer with the West Nipissing police after a man hit a tree and died.  The fatal collision took place the night of June 16th when Thomas Fremlin was trying to evade capture by Sudbury police.  He drove toward Lavigne on Highway 64 when he passed a West Nipissing police car coming in the opposite direction.  The officer knew about the Sudbury incident and turned his car around to chase Fremlin.  But he lost sight of the car within seconds because it went off the road and crashed into a tree.  The SIU says the officer was not at fault and adds police radar shows Fremlin was doing about 165 kilometres an hour when he crashed.   The SIU also says it’s likely Fremlin didn’t even know he passed a police cruiser because it was night and the officer did not have his rooftop lights on.
