Vale emergency update

There’s been no official release, but Sudbury police are saying nitrogen dioxide is the hazardous material that was released at Vale’s Copper Cliff site this morning.  The chemical can cause breathing problems.  Copper Cliff remains under an emergency which the Sudbury fire department declared about 6:30 a.m. Thursday.  Residents are being told to stay indoors and to turn off devices that suck in air from the outside, like air conditioners.  Meanwhile Vale employees heading into work are being turned away at the smelter.  And traffic on Highway 17 on Sudbury’s west side is starting to build-up as vehicles get detoured from the mine site.
