Local health unit will not be merging with Renfrew County and District

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit and the Renfrew County and District Health Unit will not be merging.

In August, the province announced one-time funding, resources and supports to local health units that decided to voluntarily merge by January of 2025.

The two boards participated in a feasibility study, which was funded by the province, and looked at pros and cons of the possible merger, including the ability to deliver public health programs and services to a new proposed catchment area.

The local board voted unanimously to merge last week, however, it was not the case in Renfrew County, who voted against the move at their meeting yesterday (Monday).

Renfrew County’s board says they believe their residents will best be served by maintaining status quo.

Local board chair Rick Champagne says they understand the decision and will now re-evaluate and consult with the Ministry of Health whether it is feasible to pursue further discussions.
