Sandhill Crane hunting season may be returning

A Sandhill Crane hunting season may be returning to Ontario.

The Canadian Wildlife Service has penned a proposal for it to return in some Northern and Central districts.

The feds say a hunting season would provide new harvesting opportunities for hunters and an additional way to help alleviate crop damage caused by the birds.

Officials say a healthy number of sandhill cranes in the province is set between 30,000 and 60,000, with the population now reaching over 97,000.

The Service adds if implemented, the hunting season would be monitored closely ensuring that Sandhill Crane numbers remain at a sustainable level.
