Another step forward for Robinson Huron Treaty settlement agreement

The Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund says the governments of Canada and Ontario have completed their internal approval processes involving a settlement agreement.

“This means that we are moving forward with getting signatures from all parties on the settlement agreement,” states a release.

The $10 billion proposed settlement was reached last June.

21 First Nations are involved, including Nipissing and Dokis.

Trustees with the fund met on Jan. 3 and signed the agreement, which next goes to Ontario’s Minister of Indigenous Affairs to be signed, then to the federal Minister of Crown Indigenous Relations.

All of these steps are anticipated to be completed in the near future.

More information on the distribution of funds will be shared once the agreement is finalized.

Engagement sessions will be held involving the disbursement of the fund at a local level.
