Over 200 area kids to compete at 9th annual FIRST LEGO qualifying tournament

Next weekend over 200 kids will gather at West Ferris Secondary School to compete for a chance to participate at the East Provincial FIRST LEGO League Challenge Championship in January.

The 9th Annual North Bay FIRST LEGO League Challenge Qualifying Tournament takes place on December 9 and is sponsored by local FIRST Team 1305.

More than 200 kids (aged 9 to 14) and over 50 student, parent and teacher mentors, will be descending on West Ferris for the competition. Officials say this year, some teams will travel from Manitoulin Island, Sudbury, Sturgeon Falls, Callander, North Bay, Burks Falls and Sundridge to participate.

Teams of 10 students will be tasked with building a robot out of LEGO that autonomously runs ‘missions’ on a competition table… all while learning more about some of the challenges in our community and how to improve them.

Teams also create a project and presentation to show a problem that showcases a problem (centered on the Masterpiece theme) and their proposed solution.  A panel of judges rates the team on numerous criteria and provides members with feedback.

The competition is free, and the public’s invited to join in on the fun.
