Heat warning in effect for the area

A heat warning is in effect for our area.

Environment Canada says along with temperatures reaching 29 to 31 degrees, we can expect humidex values of 35 to 40.

The weather agency says the heat and humidity is expected to continue Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday for some areas.

We can expect some relief with the passage of a cold front late Wednesday.

“Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category,” states the heat warning.  “The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.”

Officials say people should watch for the effects of heat illness.  They include swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.”

Other recommendations include checking on older family, friends and neighbours to make sure they are cool and drinking water, never leaving people or pets inside a parked vehicle and outdoor workers taking regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.
