Nipissing West OPP participating in Road Safety Week campaign

Expect to see Nipissing West OPP on the road over the next week watching for bad driving behaviours.

The detachment is recognizing May 16 to 22 as Canada Road Safety Week.

Provincial police will be looking for what they call the “Big 4” issues leading to collisions.

They are impaired, distracted and aggressive driving along with a lack of seatbelt usage.

During the 2022 Canada Road Safety Week initiative, Nipissing West OPP officers laid 116 charges over the 7-day period.

Speeding accounted for the vast majority of charges, with 82.

The campaign comes amid a rise in road fatalities across Ontario.

Police report 359 people were killed on OPP-patrolled roads last year, the highest number in 16 years.
