Provincial funding helping expand Bineshii Business Park

Nipissing First Nation is expanding the Bineshii Business Park on Highway 17.

Vic Fedeli, Nipissing MPP, announced $1 million from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund for the project.

“It is in land clearing, the creation of the lots and building the infrastructure to get to the lots,” he says. “This is creating an industrial park. If you look around, even in North Bay, we are in real need of serviced land.”

The total cost of the 76-acre commercial development project is $7 million. Scott McLeod, Chief of Nipissing First Nation, says they’re breaking into different sectors of business for the area.

“For over 100 years we’ve been excluded from a lot of the economic opportunities in our own territory,” he says. “In the last few decades, we’ve been working really hard to develop partnerships and take advantage of business opportunities. “

McLeod says there’s already of mix of businesses set up including gas stations, cannabis stores and Nbisiing Power.

“We’ve had interest with other businesses such as car dealerships and other types of commercial ventures,” he says. “We’re getting a lot of interest already we just have to build the infrastructure to house those different businesses.”

McLeod says ten lots are already operational, with 14 businesses, with 22 more lots being developed.

He says incentives include being right off the highway, close to North Bay and its airport along with tax-free initiatives.

The project is also getting funding from Indigenous Services Canada and FedNor, with Nipissing First Nation investing $2 million.
