Hundreds of PSAC members locally could soon be on strike

More than 155,000 federal public sector workers, including hundreds in our area, could be on the picket line on Wednesday.

The deadline has been set by the Public Service Alliance of Canada, if they aren’t able to reach a contract agreement with the federal government.

In North Bay, the union says there are over 500 members at Canada Revenue Agency, about 50 Canadian Forces workers at 22 Wing CFB North Bay and the Martin Leo Troy Armoury, 20 with Veterans Affairs and 15 at Service Canada.

About 300 members work at Statistics Canada in Sturgeon Falls.

Work duties include cleaners and cooks on military bases, clerks and maintenance workers, tradespeople, case workers at Veterans Affairs and administrative staff.

The union says at Service Canada, members process employment insurance, passport applications and immigration documents.

Union President Chris Aylward says while progress has been made on several fronts, there’s been little on the union’s key issues including wages that keep up with the cost of living, job security and remote work language.

Workers will be on strike on Wednesday if a deal isn’t agreed to by 9 o’clock Tuesday night.
