NORAD ready to track Santa on Dec 24

We’re just over a day away from Santa’s big journey across Canada and military officials at 22 Wing CFB North Bay are ready to escort him.

Since 1955, NORAD has been tracking Santa when he enters Canadian airspace on Dec. 24.

Major Vanessa Larochelle-Meilleur, Mission Crew Commander, says they first expected their satellite infrared technology to pick up the heat signature from Rudolph’s red nose.

“Then our radars that are along the northern coast of Canada are going to pick up the sleight and the reindeer,” she says. “That’s when we think we know it’s Santa.”

Maj. Larochelle-Meilleur says surveillance operators will then contact air traffic controllers.

“If air traffic controller doesn’t know who that flying object is, then we’re going to launch our CF-18s to intercept it, just so we can greet him and escort him across Canada,” she says.

There are two ways families can follow Santa.

“There’s a website, noradsanta.org and that allows everybody to go and check where Santa is at around the world,” says Maj. Larochelle-Meilleur. “There’s also a phone line that people can call.  It’s 1-877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6723).”

The website also features games, music, activities and more.

You can hear updates on Santa’s trek on our radio station, 99.3 Moose FM between 6-9 pm on Christmas Eve.
