Health Unit reports increase in flu-like and respiratory illness hospital visits

Our area has seen a big jump in emergency department visits for flu-like and respiratory illnesses.

In fact, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit’s region is experiencing double the number of visits for those reasons compared to the previous three-year average.

The Health Unit says it’s similar to what is being seen across the province, and Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health, says there are layers of protection people can use to help prevent the spread of these viruses and keep from getting ill.

“Layers of protection include staying home when you are sick, receiving both your flu shot and COVID-19 booster – which are safe to receive at the same time – practicing good hand hygiene, and wearing a mask when you are feeling unwell, both at home and when back in public after a recent illness,” he says.
