Northeast Region OPP report roadway fatalities up in 2022

The number of people killed on Ontario Provincial Police-patrolled roads in the northeast region is on the rise.

OPP report a 33% increase this year compared to last.

Year-to-date 32 people have been killed in the region, up from 24 at the same time last year.

Both inattentive and speeding-related deaths rose significantly while not wearing a seatbelt stayed the same and alcohol or drug-related are down – from two to one.

Over the long weekend, the OPP and police services across Canada are taking part in Operation Impact.

Along with seatbelt usage, the national traffic safety campaign targets drivers who are alcohol or drug impaired, aggressive and inattentive or distracted.

Province-wide, the death toll on OPP-patrolled roads reached 268 heading into October.

That’s up 24% over this time last year.
