West Nipissing marking National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Friday is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and West Nipissing is marking the occasion.

An Every Child Matters flag will be flown at the Municipal Office and lights at the West Nipissing Power Generation dam will be illuminated in orange.

Residents are also encouraged to wear orange and actively learn and reflect on the meaning of the day.

The federal government created the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to bring awareness to the history and legacy of the residential school system in Canada.

“Reconciliation is an action,” states a release from the Municipality of West Nipissing. “There are many ways to engage and learn about Canada’s colonial history and the legacy and impact of residential schools. When purchasing an orange shirt, it’s important to support an Indigenous creator or shop or a vendor who donates the proceeds to an Indigenous cause or organization.”

Sept. 30 is also Orange Shirt Day, creating awareness of the inter-generational impacts of residential schools and promoting the concept of ‘Every Child Matters’.

With Friday being a statutory holiday, the West Nipissing Municipal Office, Community and Recreation Centre and the Sturgeon Falls landfill will be closed.
