Grand Slam of Curling season starts soon in North Bay

We’re only a week and a half away from the start of the Pinty’s Boost National in North Bay.

The Oct. 4-9 event opens the Grand Slam of Curling season.

Rick Miller, co-chair, says fans will be able to see all of the top teams from around the world.

“Come out and enjoy. It’s an opportunity to see all of the Olympic Gold medalists playing and we don’t get that every day in our community, in any sport,” he says.

The list of teams includes Canadians Kevin Koe, Brad Gushue, Jennifer Jones and Rachel Homan.

“Ticket sales are very good,” Miller says. “We’ve had the full event packages out and weekend packages and now individual games are available.”

He also says the major groups that put on the event, and the curlers themselves want to come to North Bay.

“The players love it here.  We’ve heard that time and time again from the players because the fans have been so good,” he says. “This is a great arena for a curling event because it’s old style with steeper seating.  Fans are close to the rink and they can hear the players talking out there. It just makes for a wonderful atmosphere.”

Mayor Al McDonald says hosting these major curling events, like the World Women’s Championship, at Memorial Gardens has helped boost the city’s profile.

“I was getting photos from people in Japan watching it on television so that kind of tells you the exposure we received,” he says. “This is a phenomenal facility.  We’re very proud of it, very proud of the Battalion, very proud of the world-class curling events that we’re bringing in.  It just gives us another option for sports tourism in our community.”

Tickets to the Boost National Grand Slam of Curling event are available at the Battalion box office or online
