Forest fire season is here

There are several forest fires burning in the northeast region including one near Powassan. 

The third fire of the season in the North Bay District was confirmed late Thursday afternoon about eight kilometres southeast of Powassan. . 

It’s 30 hectares in size and at last check was not yet under control. 

Just after 5 pm Thursday, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) said residents in the Trout Creek and Powassan area may notice smoke from the fire.

They Tweeted that waterbombers and belly tanking helicopters were dropping water on the fire.  

Another fire, Parry Sound 5 is southeast of Trout Creek and is five hectares in size. 

As of Thursday evening, there were 16 active fires in the northeast. 

The provincial agency says to report a wildland fire located north of the French and Mattawa rivers, please dial 310-FIRE. 

To report a forest fire south of the French or Mattawa rivers, AFFES says to call 911.
