WN tax levy increases by 1%

The average West Nipissing homeowner will see an increase of $19 on their taxes.

It comes as council approved a one per cent tax levy increase on May 10.

The town’s budget 2022 budget has been set at $36,065,388.

In a staff memo, Alisa Craddock, Director of Corporate Services /Treasurer, wrote operating challenges such as “significant increases in insurance costs and continued COVID related costs were partially mitigated this year through a transfer of prior year surpluses.”

Nearly 54 per cent of the budget is made up of property taxes with the remainder coming mostly from government funding as well as user fees and dividends.

Craddock’s memo states that to reach the 1 percent increase, items were removed from the original drafted budget, including the hiring of an additional full-time clerk in Community Services, doubling school bursaries, and replacing the pool at the Cache Bay Trailer Park.

Council met many times throughout both March and April to hammer out the details after municipal staff drafted the original document.
