‘He was a beacon of light and hope’, Chief McLeod on Makenzy Lariviere

Makenzy Lariviere, the boy who showed the world what it means to be a Nipissing Warrior, has passed away.

In 2010, just before turning two, Makenzy was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Since then the community has followed his family’s journey, supporting them along the way.

His mother, Wendy, shared details of treatments to over a thousand people in the Support for Makenzy Lariviere Facebook group.

Over the weekend, Nipissing First Nation lit a sacred fire and is now coming together in a show of support for the family.

“Makenzy displayed his character to the community and the rest of the world,” said NFN Chief Scott McLeod. “He is what it means to be a Nipissing Warrior. His valiant fight against cancer was something the community followed and supported him through his struggle. It’s a sad day for us.”

McLeod says Makenzy was a leader in the community, as far as showing his strength, perseverance and resilience.

“He was a beacon of light and hope for our community,” finished McLeod. “He showed us a lot of teachings in his short time here.”
