‘Dramatic’ drop in COVID-19 hospitalizations locally

There are positive indicators with the Omicron wave of COVID-19 in the region.

Dr. Carol Zimbalatti, Public Health Physician, says in the past two weeks hospitalizations due to COVID-19, in health unit residents, have decreased 90 percent compared to the two weeks before.

“We are seeing a dramatic decrease in hospitalizations due to COVID locally.  We’re also seeing a lot fewer outbreak-related cases and outbreaks in the highest risk settings.”

Based on those indicators Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health, supports the scheduled loosening of restrictions.

“I think it’s very positive that many of the indicators are on a downward trajectory and that’s really good news for everybody.  Based on that, yeah, I’m in favour of loosening the restrictions and that people continue to do what they need to do.”

He says that means following public health restrictions that are in place and get as many people vaccinated as we can.

“We’re on a really good path right now and will continue to monitor it closely and if anything changes we’ll have to adjust,” Dr. Chicico says.

As of 3 pm Wednesday, one person was in hospital due to COVID-19 with two other people admitted to hospital for other reasons that have tested positive for the virus.

Provincially, Dr. Zimbalatti says the Ontario Science Table’s dashboard shows hospitalizations have dropped 30 percent in the past week.
