SIU investigation underway in North Bay

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after he was shot by a North Bay Police Officer.

That’s according to the province’s Police Watch Dog, the Special Investigations Unit.

The unit invoked its mandate yesterday (Jan 30) and is currently investigating.

The SIU says shortly before 5 AM on Sunday, officers encountered the 34-year-old man in front of a resident on Fraser St. He allegedly had a knife and after an interaction with police officers, an officer shot his gun and hit the man, who then fled the scene and officers gave chase.

He was then arrested on Chippewa Street West.

Police then provided first aid until paramedics arrived and he was transported to hospital.

An officer was also admitted and treated for an injury.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
