Extreme Cold Warning returns to area

Extreme Cold Warning in effect for:

North Bay – Powassan – Mattawa West Nipissing – French River

Extreme cold returning tonight.

Minimum temperatures in the minus thirties and wind chill values near minus 40 are forecast tonight for portions of the area, particularly near the Quebec border. Temperatures and wind chills will moderate by Friday afternoon.

Environment Canada says extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

The agency says to dress warmly in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. It adds to cover up, as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
