Health Unit updates COVID-19 dashboard

Changes have been made to the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit’s online dashboard of COVID-19 information.

It centres around recent provincial changes to testing eligibility.

Dr. Carol Zimbalatti, Public Health Physician, says case numbers are no longer a good representation of the local COVID-19 situation.

“The more important numbers relate to the number of hospitalizations and ICU admissions locally because the goals of public health measures are to reduce the incidents of severe disease,” she says.

She says they’re trying to provide data to the public that offers the most meaningful representation of the local situation.

“Some notable changes are being made to the dashboard including making hospitalization data more prominent, adding percent positivity for testing as a new key indicator, shifting the focus on cases from demographic and exposure data to severity of illness, by showing hospital admissions and deaths that have occurred over the different time ranges,” Dr. Zimbalatti says.

They’re also now reporting the number of residents ages five and up who are vaccinated.

Previous information involved those ages 12 and older.

Dr. Zimbalatti says as the provincial situation continues to change the dashboard will be continuously evaluated to ensure it accurately reflects the current local COVID-19 situation.
