Movie cameras continue rolling across the region

Northern Ontario-based Hideaway Pictures has signed a new production deal for 25 movies and one series to be filmed in Ontario.

The deal with the Motion Picture Corporation of America (MPCA) is worth $150 million.

It’s the second production contract between the two companies.

Hideaway Pictures says no time was wasted after signing the deal with seven original movies filmed around the province this year, including season two of When Hope Calls.

For season one, the production created a $2 million, permanent, turn-of-the-century studio backlot in Powassan.

“This studio backlot is the largest in Northern Ontario, and has attracted multiple other productions to the region since, due to its vast, picturesque landscape,” states a release.

The first production deal resulted in 25 movies being produced including the Flower Shop Mysteries with Brooke Shields, which was filmed in North Bay.

Since opening Hideaway in 2012, the company says David Anselmo has produced over 60 film and television projects in Northern Ontario.

“I love living and working in Northern Ontario. It has been truly an honour helping to showcase the region to the world through our stories,” he says.  “I had to move away to pursue my dreams, but now that I’m back, I hope I can create more opportunity for Northerners to stay local and work in this wonderful industry.”

Hideaway Pictures says Anselmo has been one of the key founders of the film and television industry in the north and is a consistent fixture in both the North Bay and Sudbury industry – attracting over $200 million in economic development over the last decade.

The film company says they’ve created two million hours of work for northern residents, amounting to 1,200 Full-time Equivalent jobs in the region since 2016.
