Provincial funding supporting post-secondary virtual learning

Virtual learning initiatives at Canadore College and Nipissing University are receiving over $700,000 from the province.

Vic Fedeli, Nipissing MPP, announced the funding on Monday for five projects at the post-secondary schools.

$265,000 goes to one program at Canadore with $438,000 for four projects at Nipissing.

George Burton, President of Canadore College, says the strategic investment by the province increases the college’s capacity to move more programs and services online, providing access anytime and anywhere.

“It is by increasing this capacity in the college that allows us to ensure we have healthy enrollments far into the future,” he says.

Burton also says the positions they’re adding help fill a much-needed gap at Canadore and more.

“[It] brings additional expertise into our Centre for Academic Excellence and will ensure that our faculty and staff have the very best tools in providing online education, or online portions in a hybrid delivery model,” he says.

Cheryl Sutton, President and Vice-Chancellor (Interim), says virtual learning has always been a key component of our programming at Nipissing.

“But, this past year has further allocated the importance of increasing our capacity for virtual learning and teaching.  Nipissing University is proud to be leading four innovative projects made possible through this funding,” she says.  “We’re also partners on twelve additional projects with other institutions across the province.”

Sutton also says the funding will support innovation in virtual learning across a wide variety of program areas, significantly increase their capacity, and enable them to share their expertise in virtual learning across the sector, while gaining insights from partners.

“These projects will help ensure our post-secondary institutions have the tools they need to create a great curriculum online,” said Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing. “By increasing virtual course offerings, we’re helping the next generation of workers, innovators, researchers, and leaders develop the skills and training they need to succeed in their careers, when and where they need it most.”
