Skyline – Lancelot Apartment outbreak declared over

The COVID-19 outbreak at Skyline – Lancelot Apartments in North Bay is now over.

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit announced the decision Wednesday morning.

In total, the outbreak infected 45 people, killing three. 23 people tested positive for a COVID-19 variant of concern (VOC) originating from South Africa with another eight getting a preliminary positive result for a VOC.

“The COVID-19 community outbreak at the Skyline – Lancelot Apartments has been the most devastating COVID-19 outbreak we have faced during this pandemic,” stated Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health. “Three people lost their lives and many others fell ill. It has been an extremely stressful time for all those living at Skyline – Lancelot Apartments.”

The outbreak was officially declared on February 8 after a cluster of cases was discovered two days earlier. The Health Unit did door-to-door testing at the building, collecting 110 tests.

17 people were found to be infected through the initial testing, with more positive cases added in the weeks following.

Residents of the apartment have since been offered a COVID-19 vaccine.

“We are still investigating the outbreak and hope that the findings will help to prevent a similar situation somewhere else,” Dr. Chirico finished.
