Health unit updates region’s variant cases

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit has confirmed 37 people have tested positive for a COVID-19 variant of concern (VOC).

Dr. Carol Zimbalatti, a public health physician with the Health Unit, says there have been 22 confirmed cases of the B.1.351 variant originating from South Africa, and two cases of the B.1.1.7 from the United Kingdom, she explained during a Monday morning briefing.

Dr. Zimbalatti added there are 13 more people with positive results for a VOC where the strain is not known.

Of the 22 South African VOC cases, 21 of them are part of the Skyline Lancelot Apartment outbreak. That makes 21 out of the outbreak’s 45 cases being the South African VOC.

Dr. Zimbalatti also confirmed the remaining South African VOC was part of the outbreak at Cassellholme Home for the Aged.

“This individual had no known connection from the Skyline Lancelot Apartments, but it is very possible he caught this virus from someone associated with the Lancelot outbreak in the community,” Dr. Zimbalatti stated in her remarks.  “The shutdown measures in effect at the time may have limited further spread.”
