“Cupcake week” kicks off year of adoption centre fundraising

National Cupcake Day will be the kickoff of numerous fundraisers by the North Bay and District Humane Society (NBDHS) as they hope to break ground on a new adoption centre this year.

Brett Greene, manager of fundraising, says National Cupcake Day is a province-wide fundraiser for humane societies.

“Fundraisers like National Cupcake Day put more of an emphasis on animal shelters like ours and allow us to do more for animals,” he said.

Cupcakes will be through partnerships with Your Independent Grocer, Twiggs Coffee Roasters, Orchard’s Fresh Food Market and Chez Jean-Marc Bakery on designated days beginning February 20.

At-home bakers can also auction off baked goods through a “Sweet Treat Auction” that same week.

The Humane Society is hoping to raise $10,000, which will go toward a new adoption centre.

Greene says the adoption centre has been in the works for about five years. The project picked up momentum when a man left over $300,000 to the NBDHS when he passed away.

The new adoption centre, Greene says, will allow the NBDHS to become the northern “hub” for animals as the facility often connects with other human societies in Ontario with available resources.

“We want to build North Bay as strong as it can be so we can continue finding homes,” he said.

The new centre will also mean more space for the NBDHS, which Greene says will allow for more separation between sick and healthy animals.

The cupcake fundraiser is one of a few that Greene is planning this year, with a golf tournament and a microchip clinic also in the works.

The tab for the new adoption centre is estimated to be at $1.2 million, with the project going to tender in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Greene says he’s just trying to support the project as much as possible.

“Our plan is to be optimistic, put our heads down, raise as much money as we can, go to tender and see this thing through,” he said, adding the adoption centre will be built “no matter what.”
