Crime Stoppers receive record amount of tips

Near North Crime Stoppers (NNCS) received a record 919 new tips in 2020.

They’re reporting that over 72 percent of those came from their website.

NNCS Police Coordinator Jean Lemieux says tips have led police to recover a substantial amount of illegal drugs and stolen property over the past year. He adds anonymous information also led to the arrest of 22 people in 2020, bringing the total tally up to 1,716 since 1988.

Board chair Ginette Cazabon says that the number one issue, year after year, is still drug-related criminal activity.  “Board statistics show that, since inception in 1988, nearly $52 million in illegal drugs have been recovered by police thanks to tips received through NNCS,” she said.

January is Crime Stoppers month around the globe and this year’s theme is ‘Helping All Communities Stay Safe’. As part of the month’s celebration, OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique, RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, and even Prime Minister Trudeau all gave kudos to the organizations and folks who have kept their communities safe over the years.
