Positive COVID-19 case reported at Nipissing University

There has been a positive case of COVID-19 reported at Nipissing University.

The university says the case was in a person who lives off-campus but did attend the Robert J. Surtees Athletics Centre on Friday, November 13. As a result, Nipissing has closed the athletic centre for deep cleaning.

It has not been specified whether the case is in a student or a staff member.

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit confirmed the case on Wednesday following two positive cases in the region reported Tuesday.

One case was in a person between the ages of 20 to 39, while the other was between 40 and 59. It has not been specified whether the case at Nipissing is in a student or staff member.

“Our staff are working with Nipissing University to provide important public health direction,” said Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health. “We remind the public that we must continue to work together to help slow the spread of COVID-19 by following public health measures and limiting social activities and travel outside the district.”

It is the first case of COVID-19 reported at Nipissing this year. The university has been providing exclusively virtual learning for the fall semester, with the plan to offer some in-person instruction beginning in January.

The positive case at Nipissing comes a week after Canadore College reported its first COVID-19 case.

As of Wednesday morning, there are five active cases of COVID-19 in the Nipissing District, and one in the District of Parry Sound.
