WNFS holds West Nipissing Santa Fund fundraiser despite pandemic

For over a decade the West Nipissing Fire Service has held a telethon every holiday season.

The telethon sees thousands of dollars raised through pledges by the community. The money goes to the WNFS’s West Nipissing Santa Fund, which gives toys to children, and food to families during the holiday season.

Last year, 154 families (345 children) in West Nipissing benefited from the Fund.

This year, however, the plan has changed.

With the municipality using the Marcel Noël Hall for the COVID-19 assessment centre, as well as the strict gathering limits across the province, the WNFS has had to implement changes.

This year Moose FM will be partnering up with the firefighters for a radiothon.

On November 27, from 6 am to 6 pm, firefighters and volunteers will be at Station 1B on Cache Bay Road staffing the phones for pledges.

“We’re grateful for Moose FM for the help. Without the radiothon, the toy drive would fold,” said WNFS Chief Richard Maranda.”This year we will have an online auction on top of the pledges. On the day of, we will also go out and collect the money from individuals if it’s easier.”

Maranda says that Giant Tiger also donated to the cause with bread, milk and egg vouchers for families with children.

“It’s all about making sure every child has a decent Christmas, just like the rest of the population.”

Residents can pledge by phone (705-580-0707) and by e-transfer ([email protected], password santa, lower case) as well as in-person (Station 1B at 118 Cache Bay Rd, Sturgeon Falls).

More information about the event can be found here.
