Single-vehicle crash leads to drug charges

A single-vehicle collision near Sturgeon Falls has resulted in two area men facing charges for drug possession and impaired driving.

On the afternoon of September 19, Nipissing West OPP responded to a vehicle that failed to remain at a collision on Highway 17 east of Sturgeon Falls.

Police say the vehicle had swerved across the highway, causing damage to both the guard rail and ditch.

Officers then stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver. Police seized an estimated $13,250 worth of suspected Fentanyl and cocaine, a replica handgun and $750 in cash.

The 33-year-old North Bay man has been charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs
  • Possession of Imitation Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Opioid (other than heroin)
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 – in Canada
  • Drive Motor Vehicle – No Licence

Police say that the drivers switched after the collision but before officers located the vehicle. As a result, a 40-year-old man from Sturgeon Falls has been charged with:

  • Drive Motor Vehicle – No Licence
  • Careless Driving

Neither person was hurt in the collision.

The North Bay man appeared in bail court on September 24.

Nipissing West OPP has now charged 46 drivers with impaired in 2020.
