OPP reminding public to move over this weekend

The OPP is reminding anyone on the highways this long weekend to drive safely, and move over for emergency vehicles.

The OPP says that it will be monitoring roadways and waterways for the Civic Holiday weekend looking out for the “big four”: aggressive driving, impaired driving, seatbelt use and distracted driving.

Police say that with increased traffic expected this weekend, that there will also be more emergency vehicles on the road. They stress that if you see lights flashing behind you to slow down and move over. If there’s a vehicle on the side of the highway, police say to slow down and move into another lane if possible.

Drivers failing to move over for emergency vehicles can receive a fine of up to $2,000 and three demerit points.

Ontario is the only province with legislation on moving over for emergency vehicles.
