Savage encourages residents of West Nipissing to wear masks

West Nipissing is following the advice of the North Bay Parry Sound Health Unit when it comes to wearing masks.

“The municipality is working with the health unit,” Mayor Joanne Savage said. “We still all have to be cognitive that there is a COVID virus in our area and we want to mitigate the risk and everyone to be safe.”

Dr. Theresa Tam, the chief public health officer of Canada said last week that Canadians should wear masks as an added layer of protection whenever physical distancing is not possible. However, Savage says there are some challenges when it comes to ensuring everyone is safe.

“Amongst individuals in our community, there are a variety of responses,” Savage said. “Some people feel adamant that they need to wear a mask, and other people feel like they don’t want to wear a mask. It’s a challenge at a municipal level to be able to say ‘please do so’ when it has not been enacted as a law by the province.”

“Anything that we can do as residents to make sure that our family, our friends, our neighbours, and our community to remain safe, it’s the opportunity for everyone to step up to the plate and do their part,” she added.
