Team 1305 picks up some hardware

While their annual competitions may have been cancelled, it didn’t stop local FIRST Robotics Team 1305 from taking home some hardware.

During the FIRST Canada 2020 Online Awards Gala, Team 1305 was one of 11 teams to be awarded the Chairman’s Award. Officials say this award is the most prestigious award awarded in FIRST Robotics, and honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. The award was created in order to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders.

To earn this award, students were required to submit a detailed essay and executive summary outlining their sustained efforts, which were supported with extensive data. They also created a three-minute video celebrating their role as a FIRST Gateway team.

Colton Chaput, a member of Team 1305 was named one of five finalists from across Ontario for the Dean’s List Award. Officials say this award goes to students who best demonstrate and dedication as outstanding secondary school students.

In order to be named a finalist, Colton’s mentors submitted an essay describing his commitment to FIRST and the community. He was also required to complete an interview with FIRST judges.

Team 1305 officials say they are keeping busy during the COVID-19 pandemic as team members are making personal protective equipment such as masks and headbands for frontline workers. Additionally, 1305 has been working with a local emergency room doctor and engineers to design and test a UV sterilization cart for personal equipment such as surgical masks, cell phones, ID badges, and goggles.
