West Nipissing following province on lifting fire ban

With the provincial government lifting the restricted fire zone, the Municipality of West Nipissing is following close behind at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 16th.

“We are following suit to the MNRF (Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry) lifting the fire ban for the entire municipality,” West Nipissing Fire Service Chief Richard Maranda said.

West Nipissing does not require you to have a fire permit to begin having a backyard campfire, however, Maranda says to keep it within reason.

“A campfire is two feet by two feet and is a small contained fire,” he explained. “We want to emphasize that physical distancing and keeping gatherings less than five people remains difficult to maintain, however, it is important that we keep on this path to protect the community, friends, and family.”

“A pile of brush requires a permit, anything over two square feet,” Maranda added.

In order to acquire a permit to burn brush, Maranda says you must call town hall to get the permit over the phone.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry was contacted to ask the fire danger level coming out of the restricted fire zone ban but had not returned the calls by publication date.
